SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK!

Reviewed by: David Menconi

Publisher/Manufacturer: Rhino Records
To people of a certain age, "Schoolhouse Rock" is as indelible a cultural touchstone as "The Ed Sullivan Show" was for their parents. All it takes is one chorus--"Conjunction Junction, what's your function? Hookin' up words and phrases and clauses" -- and it's 1975 all over again. This wonderful four-disc box set has all 41 "Schoolhouse Rock" cartoon jingles, packaged in a faux-denim notebook with liner notes on loose-leaf paper.

The wonder of it is how well jingles like "I'm Just a Bill" and "My Hero, Zero" hold up as just music, without visuals. "Schoolhouse Rock" is also a fascinating period piece, investing multiplication tables and grammar rules with a cosmic mysticism. There's a can-do optimism about these jingles and their idealistic statement of purpose ("Knowledge is power!") that seems quaint and old-fashioned, but will improve the atmosphere in any household. All four of this set's volumes on math, science, grammar, and history are also available separately.
