SIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION

Publisher/Manufacturer: Various

Just because your baby can't talk, doesn't mean she can't communicate with sign language. In fact, experts say that babies can start using signs when they're as young as eight months. Why would you want that? Babies who sign have fewer temper tantrums, because they can actually tell you what they want. Plus, it gives parents and their children another way to bond, it's fun, and it will amaze your family and friends. These two instruction books take different approaches, though. "Baby Signs" recommends that parents let babies make up their own signs---whatever makes sense for you. The authors' thinking is that babies will move on from sign language as soon as they learn to talk.

Joseph Garcia, author of "Sign With Your Baby," thinks it's more worthwhile for babies to learn American Sign Language, which deaf and hearing-impaired people nationwide use. That way more people will understand your child, and your baby can stick with it through pre-school and on into adulthood---essentially learning a second language. There are videos available to complement each book. The one from Baby Signs has instructions and an interview with a mom, but is not professionally produced. Garcia offers a "Sign With Your Baby" kit that includes the book, video, and a quick-reference to frequently used signs.
