OB/GYN: Roy Pitkin, M.D.

I am 11 weeks into my first pregnancy. Before becoming pregnant I weighed 146 lbs. with a height of 5' 8". I am now about 155 lbs., which keeps fluctuating up and down each day. Is this normal weight gain or should it be more? When will weight gain increase?

By Roy Pitkin, M.D.

Your gain of 9 pounds over the first 11 weeks is a little more than usual. From here on, your rate of gain should be around 3 pounds every 4 weeks. This would give you a total gain at term of about 30 pounds which is well within the normal range for a woman of your height and pre-pregnancy weight.
