Q: I am 11 weeks into my first pregnancy. Before becoming pregnant I weighed 146 lbs. with a height of 5' 8". I am now about 155 lbs., which keeps fluctuating up and down each day. Is this normal weight gain or should it be more? When will weight gain increase?

A: Your gain of 9 pounds over the first 11 weeks is a little more than usual. From here on, your rate of gain should be around 3 pounds every 4 weeks. This would give you a total gain at term of about 30 pounds which is well within the normal range for a woman of your height and pre-pregnancy weight.
