Pediatric Nutrition: William J. Klish
When do you think I can feed my baby broccoli? She does not like any fruit or fruit juice, but loves vegetables. I'm worried that she's not getting enough vitamin C.
By William Klish, M.D.
I know of no reason why a baby cannot be introduced to broccoli, as long as it is pureed to a consistency that can be tolerated. All babies develop taste preferences, but don't give up yet on fruits. Periodically offer them, and you may be surprised to see your infant finally accepting them. However, do not force any food upon your infant and don't worry too much about juice. Juice has very little to offer an infant other than a pleasant tasting fluid. A baby should get no more than two four-ounce servings a day so that the juice does not replace other more important foods. If you vary the diet of your infant she should get adequate amounts of vitamin C, even without fruit.
